Answer: Fertilisation
E. Answer the following questions.
1. What is digestion? Starting from the mouth, state the various steps involved in digestion.
Answer: The process of breakdown of food into very fine and soluble particles is Called digestion.
Step 1: Mouth – In mouth saliva helps to moisten and soften the food so that it can be easily swallowed.
Step 2: Food pipe – food pipe is a muscular organ that pushes the food down into the stomach.
Step 3: Stomach – in our stomach the food gets mixed with the gastric juice secreted by the gastric glands of the stomach. Gastric juice helps in digestion of food.
Step 4: Liver and Pancreas- liver secretes bile juice and pancreas secrete pancreatic juice which contain certain enzymes that helps in the digestion of food.
Step 5: small intestine – The small intestine absorbs nutrients from the digested food and send them to all the parts of the body through the blood.
Step 6: Large intestine – The large intestine helps in absorption of water from the undigested food which is then pushed out as waste.
2. Draw a diagram of the tongue and show the location of the taste buds on it.
Answer: For diagram see page no. 142 of your science book.
3. Explain the role of diaphragm in the process of breathing.
Answer: Lungs cannot move by themselves; it is the movement of the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs of the chest wall that causes the expansion and contraction of the lungs. Thus, breathing takes place.
4. Give the function of the heart, and the blood vessels, in the circulatory system.
Answer:
the main function of the heart is to pump blood and keep it moving in the blood vessels. Functions of blood vessels:
1. Arteries – Arteries take blood away from the heart to various parts of the body.
2. Veins – Bring blood back to the heart from different parts of the body.
3. Capillaries – These are very fine vessels which connect arteries and veins to each other.
5. State the function of the nervous system. Briefly explain the role of nerves in it.
Answer: nervous system controls and coordinates all the activities of our body.
Functions of nerves: nerves are of two types
1. Sensory nerves – carry messages from sense organs to the brain.
2. Motor nerves – carry commands given by the brain to the muscles.
6. Give a brief outline of the process of excretion, by the kidneys, in human beings.
Answer: kidneys filter out waste products from the blood. These wastes form a light-yellow liquid called the urine. In this way, the blood gets purified by the kidneys. Kidneys help in removing not only harmful substances such as urea but also excess water from the blood.
